How to Keep Your Accounts Safe: Password Requirements and Tips

Introduction

Your Keyano account gives you one-click access to all Keyano resources like Teams, Email, Keyano Devices, and more, using SSO (Single Sign-On). To keep your account safe and secure, we ask that you choose a strong password. Here are our password requirements and some tips to help you create a password that's both secure and easy to remember!

Remember that every website and organization has different password requirements, but our Password Tips & Tricks can help you improve your password management and keep your accounts secure. Check them out for some great ideas and best practices!

Password Requirements

  • Minimum password length: 12 characters
  • Password complexity:
    • At least 1 UPPERCASE letter
    • At least 1 LOWERCASE letter
    • At least 1 NUMBER
    • At least 1 SPECIAL CHARACTER (symbols like @!#$%^&*)

Other Considerations

  • You cannot use common words like “Keyano”, “Huskies”, or "Password" within your password.
  • Your password cannot contain your username, first, or last name.
  • You cannot reuse your last 4 passwords.
  • Do not include spaces in your password.
  • Do not use your personal details (e.g. birthday, hometown, pet’s name).

Password Tips & Tricks

  • Use a passphrase! Ditch the complicated passwords and switch to a passphrase, which is both easier to remember and more secure. This new approach to passwords will make your life easier and keep your Keyano account safe!
    • For example, you can create a passphrase by using association techniques. Look around your desk and choose words that describe what you see, like "lamp, monitor, family photo". Then, put these words together with a separator, like a hyphen, to form a phrase like "lamp-monitor-family-photo". Next, make the phrase more secure by adding capital letters and replacing a letter with a number, such as "Lamp-M0nit0r-Family-Ph0t0". This way, you have a secure password that is also easy to remember!
  • If you prefer using a complex password, you can still make it easier to remember by using association techniques.
    • Choose a phrase that is meaningful to you, and then use the first letter of each word to form the password. For example, the phrase "My jersey number when I played competitive soccer was 27!" can be transformed into the password "Mj#wIpcsw27!". This way, you have a complex password that you can easily remember, instead of struggling to recall a random set of characters.
  • Boost your account security with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)! With MFA, you'll need to provide two or more forms of authentication to access your account, making it much harder for hackers to get in, even if they have your password. At Keyano, we require all users to use MFA. Don't worry, setting it up is easy! Some common types of MFA include:
    • A password and a security code sent to your phone or email
    • A password and a fingerprint or facial recognition scan
    • A password and a physical security key
  • If you feel overwhelmed by the number of passwords that you have, you can use a password manager to generate and track your many passwords. More information about supported password managers can be found here.
